Gem vs Ashby
This is an architecture decision disguised as a tool comparison. Gem is primarily a system of engagement that sits on top of whatever ATS you run (it now also sells its own ATS) — sequences, nurture, pipeline analytics. Ashby is an all-in-one: ATS, scheduling, analytics, and a sourcing module in a single modern product that's been winning startup and scaleup accounts from Greenhouse and Lever.
| Gem | Ashby | |
|---|---|---|
| Architecture | Layer over your existing ATS, or all-in-one with Gem’s own ATS | Replaces the ATS entirely |
| Sourcing/outreach | Best-in-class sequences and nurture | Capable built-in sourcing module |
| Analytics | Deep funnel analytics for TA leaders | Strong native analytics across the whole funnel |
| Migration cost | Low — additive | High — it's an ATS switch |
| Pricing | Custom by company FTE count; published startup program | Published from $400/mo (Foundations, 1–10 employees); larger plans custom |
| Best fit | Teams keeping Greenhouse/Lever who need engagement | Teams willing to consolidate on one platform |

| Category | Recruiting CRM with sourcing | Modern ATS with sourcing module | Autonomous AI sourcing agent |
| Best for | TA teams that live in outreach sequences and want CRM-grade pipeline tracking | Startups and scaleups on Ashby that want light outbound without extra tools | Staffing agencies and lean teams that want sourcing done for them, not another database to search |
| AI-native | No | No | Yes |
| Free tier | No | No | No |
| Key integrations | Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby | Gem, LinkedIn (extension), Gmail | Greenhouse, Ashby, Lever |
If your ATS is staying, Gem is the strongest engagement layer you can add to it. If you're already unhappy with your ATS, Ashby's consolidation — one product, one analytics layer, sourcing included — is the more forward-looking buy and often cheaper in total. Don't buy Gem to compensate for an ATS you're about to leave.
